How can I conduct industry research at Rollins College?
Answer
Rollins has several options for industry and sector research: IBISWorld, Fitch Solutions, and Euromonitor. All of these are available on our Business research guide or our A-Z Database page.
IBISWorld provides detailed industry reports for the United States, Canada, and China. These reports tend to be more granular than those in Fitch Solutions or Euromonitor. For example, "Sand and Gravel Mining in the US" in IBISWorld versus just "Mining" for Fitch Solutions. To get started, type your search terms into the search bar, or click on the "Industry Research" heading at the top of the page to navigate by category.
You can navigate through these reports using the sections on the left side of the page. Key sections include "Industry at a Glance," which lists statistics such as industry revenue and profit. "Major Companies" lists the major players in the industry, depending on how the industry is structure. "Products and Markets" situates the industry within the supply chain, linking you to supplier industries and buyer industries.
Fitch Solutions allows you to search for global reports for 24 sectors including Mining, Renewables, and Tourism. These reports are not as granular as IBISWorld's, but they cover dozens of countries. An example would be the "United Kingdom Medical Devices Report." From the Fitch Solutions home page, click on "Industries" to navigate by industry.
Once you do that, you have the option of reading different types of information using the different tabs. The content in "Global and Regional Analysis," "Country Analysis," and "Country Strategic Content" tends to be more short-term, while the latter three tabs are quarterly or occasional reports. Click on "Country Reports" for quarterly industry reports.
These reports include an industry SWOT, regulatory information by country or region, and regional overviews. You can navigate through the reports by clicking on the different sections in each report's table of contents. These reports typically run between 40-60 pages, but their length can vary.
Finally, Euromonitor provides access to consumer-focused industry reports for several dozen countries. Categories include "Beauty and Personal Care" and "Luxury Goods." There are two main ways to search Euromonitor's collection of industry reports.
- Type in the category name plus a country name into the search bar. For example, "apparel" paired with "India." This will bring up the associated report.
- Hover over the "Industries" tab, and click on an industry. This will take you to a specialized page for that industry. You will be able to access statistics, shorter-term briefings, and longer-term country reports.
Country reports consist of several sections. "Analysis" contains forecasts and predictions for that industry from Euromonitor's analysts. "Datagraphics" includes statistics, charts, and graphs for the industry. Finally, "Context" situates the report within a global context.
